At Climb for the Cure, we only offer recommendations based on our real-world experience - and Duane Ramsey, C4C Chairman, got fit with Paul Swift at Cycle Point and cannot recommend him enough for pain-free cycling. Check out this post below to see what we learned in a session with Paul. (January and February discounts listed at the bottom of the post)
Climb for the Cure Bike Fit Tip: The V-Twin Cyclist
Are You a V-Twin—or Maybe a Half-Twin?
Ever noticed your knees moving outward when you pedal? Youmight be what we call a “V-Twin” cyclist—just like the engine! And if only oneknee tracks outward, congratulations, you’re a “Half-Twin.”
Take a look at Duane, the founder of Climb for the Cure. He’s a great example of how this can show up on the bike.
(Spoiler: I’m a Half-Twin myself!) Check out theillustration below for an example.
What’s Happening When Knees Move Outward?
At the top of the pedal stroke, your knee often moves toward its preferred position, and for many riders, that’s outward—forming a “V” shape like a V-Twin engine. Just look around, I am sure you have seen this scenario. As a bike fitter, my job is to help align your feet and knees for a smoother, more efficient ride.
Here’s the goal: the closer your knees track towardyour second toe, the better for power, efficiency, and comfort—plus, it reduces your risk of discomfort or injury.
Your alignment can still be off even if you are not a full-onV-Twin and here are a couple other scenarios of lateral or outside knee tracking.
For riders with knees that track outward, the solution often starts with cleat adjustments. By moving the cleat inward, we can shift your foot outward to better align with your knee.
But what if your knees move out farther than your cleat sallow? That’s where pedal spacers come in from www.BicycleFit.com. These spacers extend the pedal further from the crank arm, giving your feet the spacing they need for improved alignment.
We added a pedal spacer to Duane’s bike, and the difference was remarkable—improved comfort, better alignment, and more efficient pedaling.
It worked wonders for me, too!
Common Complaints of V-Twin Cyclists
If you’re a V-Twin cyclist, you might experience:
Sound familiar? You’re not alone! A recent survey of top bike fitters revealed that nearly 40% of cyclists benefit from at least one pedal spacer, with many needing them on both sides.
